In 1998, the NCL published the Taiwan Area Rare Books Union Catalog, providing a record of rare books and general string-bound works in public collections in Taiwan. This publication has been expanded to include rare books in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Australia and other overseas collections. Titled the Chinese Rare Book Catalog, it currently comprises over 630,758 bibliographies. This database includes rare book bibliographies in Metadata format and presented in several core bibliographic field. Users can search for materials through 14 search values and both traditional and simplified search interfaces. Search results can be presented in detailed or summarized form. Moreover, to provide readers with access to a broader selection of rare books, the database allows for linked searches of rare books in mainland Chinese, Japanese, U.S., and Europe collections. The database accepts material in CMARC, CNMARC and USMARC formats to facilitate the search, display, uploading, and maintenance of information. In future, the system will be made compatible with international standard metadata bibliographic information export functions to facilitate exchange. The NCL platform "Rare Books & Special Collections" (古籍與特藏文獻資源) provides access to the following databases: "Union Catalogue of Rare Books Database" (中文古籍聯合目錄), "Rare Book Digital Image Search System" (古籍影像檢索資料庫), "Taiwan Family Genealogy Union Catalogue" (台灣地區家譜聯合目錄資料庫), and "Bronze & Stone & Rubbing Database" (金石拓片資料庫). The "Union Catalog of Rare Books Database" imports metadata of Chinese rare books from libraries all over the world. A list of current data providers and number of titles imported can be accessed here: "http://rbook2.ncl.edu.tw/Search/Participate/2". The large numbers of titles/exemplars result from the fact that not only pre-1912 Chinese books are included, but also facsimile reprints of these books. Unfortunately it is not possible to exclude these facsimiles editions. Moreover, each exemplar of a title has its own database entry. Thus identical editions appear several times. The "Rare Book Digital Image Search System" provides access to the digital images of NCL and those of selected data providers.
