<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>This article examines coverage of <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">B</jats:styled-content>ritain's conflict with the <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">A</jats:styled-content>merican colonies in <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">C</jats:styled-content>hristian <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">F</jats:styled-content>riedrich <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">D</jats:styled-content>aniel <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">S</jats:styled-content>chubart's popular <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">G</jats:styled-content>erman‐language periodical <jats:italic>Deutsche Chronik</jats:italic> from <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">M</jats:styled-content>arch 1774 to the beginning of 1777. <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">S</jats:styled-content>chubart was an enthusiastic supporter of the revolutionary movement, which he thought could serve as a model for <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">G</jats:styled-content>erman‐speaking <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">E</jats:styled-content>uropeans. However, Britain's use of <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">G</jats:styled-content>erman troops against the <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">A</jats:styled-content>mericans marked a turning point in the way the <jats:italic>Chronik</jats:italic> covered the conflict. It not only resulted in a significant increase in reports about <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">A</jats:styled-content>merican developments, but also compelled <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">S</jats:styled-content>chubart to introduce alternative interpretations of the <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">A</jats:styled-content>mericans' struggle with <jats:styled-content style="fixed-case">B</jats:styled-content>ritain.</jats:p>
