Beschreibung:
A fundamental investigation of the relationship of aesthetic and theological interpretation of Bach's music. The author urges that both aspects be regarded as complementary rather than contradictory, with Bach's art itself being viewed as essentially theonomic. In part 1, Paul Tillich's concept of theonomy is explicated; in part 2 Bach's musical outlook and personal style is considered with reference to the treatment of figures, symbols, forms, and principles of order.
