I will begin my commentary with some general reflections on what the discussions at the conference, from which the articles in this volume have been drawn, suggested about what has been happening to the field of policing — the underlying theme of the conference. My commentary will be idiosyncratic in the sense that I will pick up on the sub-themes that I found to be most relevant to this topic. The themes I have selected are ones that speak to the framework of assumptions that underlay much of what was said. I will then turn to more specific comments on articles that I was asked specifically to comment on at the conference. Both the general and specific comments draw on articles that are not presented in this volume. My comments are thus a vehicle for going beyond the particular sampling of articles that appear in this volume to provide a more general sense of the tone and character of the conference
