For almost two decades now, with sculpture and photography with object and images, Sophie Kalkau has been busy scrutinizing and making visual poetic reflections on the relationship between the body, the surroundings and our capacity to to imagine and visualize. Accoring to Kalkau, the human being is anything but a mechanical contraption, but is rather an organism that can take shape according to circumstances that are either self-created or have emerged as a consequence of external necessities. As a center of rotation for her oeuvre there is the recognition that in this interaction between thought, body an the world, there are pictures that are steadily coming into being, pictures that bind together, pictures that establish connections indicating possibilities for the mind and for the body, pictures that demarcate and expand
