  • Beschreibung: Since the 1900’s spectroscopy has made many advancements with the discovery of fine splitting, hyperfine splitting, Zeeman effect, Paschen-Back effect, Lamb shift and Stark effect. This has been possible due to increasingly more accurate and precise energy measurement methods. This thesis concentrates on an experimental setup that uses components from a Lamb shift polarimeter built in the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Jülich to transition metastable hydrogen atoms from hyperfine state alpha 1 to the hyperfine state beta 3 in the presence of a sinusoidal static magnetic field profile inside the Sona unit. For this purpose, the Sona unit must be well shielded from the significantly stronger magnetic fields of the spin filter placed on either side of the Sona transition unit, with the help of mu-metal shielding. The solenoid coil inside the Sona unit is also redesigned from two individual coaxial coils wound around two different cores with an adjustable separation to a single core coaxial 24 coil solenoid system, with 12 coils being used in one polarity and the other 12 coils being used for the opposite polarity, with a fixed distance. This new design along with the improved shielding is expected to have a more precise sinusoidal profile in the longitudinal direction and as a result in the radial direction which would help improve the efficiency of the experiment therefore improving the precision of the readings.
