  • Beschreibung:
Naeve-Bucher's doctoral thesis from the University of Stockholm examines the theme of courtship in approximately seventeen German and Swedish texts. Although only implicitly hinted at in the title, the works chosen are predominantly dramas. The German ones are largely taken from the canon (Faust, Emilia Galotti, Kabale und Liebe); the Swedish plays are apparently unavailable in German editions, and the author provides her own translations of quotations. The study is grounded on the premiss that literary texts are a product of the society in which they are written and exist in dialogue with the conditions of that society. With reference to Foucault, Naeve-Bucher sets out to question how the literary protagonists react to social norms and power structures. The first two parts of the thesis introduce the topic and the socio-historical background. The third is divided into five thematic sub-headings, covering “Formen der Annäherung”, “Formen der Werbung”, “Formen des weiblichen Kokettierens”, “Formen von Versuchung und Verführung” and “Die Rolle der Mütter / Väter”. Naeve-Bucher concludes ultimately that the writers tend to promote rather than subvert the dominant values of their age.
