In many industries, such as space engineering, aircraft construction, shipbuilding, automotive, railways, etc. the service life of particular structures and their elements exceeds high-cycle range and reaches the giga-cycle range. Standard (low-frequency) methods of fatigue tests cannot provide the required experimental characteristics of durability in giga-cycle range; therefore, the method of high-frequency (ultrasound) tests has now become one of the most applied since it provides the possibility for reduction of testing time intervals by tens of times. The development of high-frequency method is an urgent task, since at the time being there is no universally recognized
standard for conducting high-frequency testing of materials. At the same time, it is necessary to find solution for the problem of comparability of the results obtained in high-frequency and standard low-frequency tests. This review of studies of fatigue characteristics of low-carbon and high-carbon steels reveals factors that affect the comparability of the studied methods.
