  • Beschreibung: <p>Charles Batteux's aesthetic treatise Les beaux arts réduits à un même principes (1746) was widely discussed in German-speaking countries during the second half of the eighteenth century. Various translations with significantly different approaches were published by Philipp Ernst Bertram, Johann Adolf Schlegel, Johann Christoph Gottsched, and (as part of Cours de helles lettres) Karl Wilhelm Ramler. These translations contributed substantially to the then fierce debate on imitation, a debate that provided particular challenges for the emerging field of music aesthetics. Closer scrutiny of the translators' procedures following more recent tendencies of historically oriented translation studies reveals how translation was by no means merely a prerequisite for controversy but already a major arena for it.</p>
