  • Beschreibung: <p>Kinetic constants of nitrification were determined by respirometry with two mixed cultures grown in hydraulically different reactors. Kinetic constants of the first stage of nitrification were considerably higher with mixed culture grown in a reactor with the plug-flow pattern than with mixed culture grown in a completely mixed reactor. Nitrifiers from the completely mixed system were much more sensitive to higher concentrations of ammonia and were much less suitable for nitrification than organisms from a plug-flow system. Kinetic constants of second stage nitrification cannot be determined directly by dosing nitrites into a reaction mixture because ammonia oxidation forms nitrites inside the floc matrix; they can be computed from data from a batch experiment with ammonia as a sole nitrogen substrate.</p>
