<p>The army of the life-size terra-cotta figures of soldiers unearthed near the tomb of the first Chinese emperor is commonly understood as substituting for the real army. This article attempts to specify what exactly these figures represent, to determine their status more precisely, and to account for their facial diversity. It is suggested that even though the clay warriors do not represent individuals, they do refer to specific members of the army whose status is determined by their participation in the whole. Here, the traditional dichotomy between individual and type is challenged.</p>
