<p>Forty-two circular bark plugs 4.8 cm in diameter were cut from country roadside trees bearing 19 species of lichens and mosses. The plugs were transplanted in the summer of 1964 onto trees in Sudbury, Ontario, where the atmosphere is heavily polluted by sulfur dioxide. In October of 1965 most of the transplanted lichens and mosses were dead or greatly damaged. The lichens Bacidia chlorococca and Parmelia sulcata were the species most tolerant of the contaminated atmosphere.</p>
