Les peintures de la voûte de la nef de la collégiale limousine de Saint-Junien ont été mises à jour en 1981 mais restent mal connues. Elles sont pourtant l'un des rares exemples de peintures murales romanes dans une région où peu d'ensembles ont subsisté, et montrent quel pouvait être le décor d'un des édifices majeurs de l'ancien diocèse de Limoges. Leur réalisation correspond à une série d'embellissements sous-tendus par un programme liturgique qui redéfini la fonction de la collégiale. L'image présente un bel exemple de cohérence style/sujet et de hiérarchisation des thèmes représentés par une utilisation concertée des procédés plastiques. En outre, l'analyse stylistique permet de nouvelles observations sur la pratique picturale en Limousin à la fin du XIIe siècle dont on ignore presque tout.
The Romanesque wallpaintings in the nave of the collegiate church of Saint-Junien (Haute-Vienne), by Éric Sparhubert The paintings on the vault of the nave of the collegiate church of Saint-Junien were discovered in 1981 but are still relatively unknown. A rare example of wallpainting in a region where very little has sunived, these paintings give an idea of the decoration of a major edifice in the diocèse of Limoges. Their realisation corresponds with a series of decorations that were part of a liturgical programme which redefined the function of the collegiate church. The vault presents a fine example of coherency between style and subject and of the use of plastic techniques to underscore the hierarchy of the themes. The stylistic analysis furnishes new observations on pictorial practices in the limousin at the end of the twelfth century, for which we have little evidence otherwise.
