Thirty Years of Urbanization under the New Order in Indonesia. Indonesia has recently experienced a fast urbanization process, which is closely related to the growth and diversification of its economy. This urbanization is physical. It also influences the rural world through temporary migrations of the populations to urban areas, and through the spreading of non-agricultural employment in the rural world. Today, this fast urbanization process is seen in Java, especially in the Jakarta metropolitan area. It deepens the gap between the capital region and the rest of the country. Even though the strong relationship between the urban and the rural areas curbs the physical urbanization, the cities are still confronted with problems of management and town planning .
L'Indonésie, pays rural et agricole il y a peu, a connu depuis trente ans une forte accélération de son urbanisation, en relation avec la croissance et la diversification de son économie. Cette urbanisation diffusée aussi en milieu rural par l'intermédiaire des migrations temporaires vers les villes et l'emploi non agricole , est actuellement rapide à Java et autour de Jakarta, accentuant le fossé qui sépare la capitale du reste de l'Indonésie. Bien que freinée par les relations étroites qu'entretiennent les mondes ruraux et urbains, cette rapide urbanisation pose problème au niveau de la gestion des villes et des mécanismes de planification qui se heurtent à de graves obstacles institutionnels.
