E. Freidson examine ici les réorganisations que doit subir la théorie des professions, au sens anglo-saxon, à la lumière de l'analyse du statut professionnel des artistes. Il distingue les métiers ou statuts professionnels en général (vocation) des professions de type libéral (professions). A l'intérieur de celles-ci, s'inspirant de l'opposition proposée par Hannah Arendt entre activité ou œuvre (work) et travail (labor), il propose de distinguer activité libre, reposant sur un engagement personnel (commitment ), « de vocation », et activité, éventuellement tout à fait distincte, exercée pour le marché, l'une « nourrissant » l'autre comme, en écologie végétale, les plantes hôtes le font avec les plantes parasites. Les professions académiques et, plus encore, les professions d'artistes offrent des exemples de cette dualité.

Al interior de aquellas, inspirandose de la oposición propuesta por Hannah Arendt entre actividad u obra (work) y trabajo (labor), él propone de distinguir actividad libre, basandose sobre un compromiso personal (commitment), "de vocación", y actividad, quizas completamente distinta, ejercida por el comercio, una "alimentando" la otra como en ecologia vegetal las plantas anfitrionas lo hacen con las plantas parasitas. Las profesiones académicas y, más todavia, las profesiones de artistas ofrecen unos ejemplos de esta dualidad.

Eric Freidson untersucht hier die Reorganisation, die die Theorie der professions, im angelsächsischen Sinne, erfahren muss, im Lichte der Analyse des Berufsstatus der Künstler. Er unterscheidet den Beruf oder den professiormellen Status allgemein (vacation) vom liberalen Beruf (professions). Innerhalb dieser Berufe, mit Hilfe der von Hannah Arendt vorgeschlagenen Gegenuberstellung zwischen Aktivitat oder Werk (work) und Arbeit (labor), unterscheidet er die freie Aktivitat, die auf einem persönliehen Engagement beruht (commitment) von « vocation » und Aktivitat, gegebenenfalls volkommen getrermt, wie sie auf dem Markt ausgeubt werden, wobei die eine die andere « nährt » wie in der Pflanzenökologie, die Gastpflanzen es mit den Schmarotzerpflanzen handhaben. Die akademischen Berufe und mehr noch die kimstlerischen Berufe bieten Beispiele dieser Dualität.
Eliot Freidson: The conceptual challenge of the artistic vocations. The author investigates the reorganization which the theory of professions (in the anglo-american sense) must undergo in the light of analysis of the professional status of the artists. In general, he differentiates vocations or vocational statuses from professions. Among these, and adopting the opposition suggested by Hannah Arendt between activity as work and labor, he proposes distinguishing desinterested activity, based on a personal committment, and activity which is practised for the market, the one "nourishing" the other as do host plants with parasites. Academic professions and even more so artistic professions show examples of this duality.
