<jats:p> Janet Harbord and Peter Mortimore are at the Institute of Education of the University of London. In this paper they discuss the research needs of local education authorities in the London region, and the difficulties which they currently face in trying to meet them. Such research, they conclude, is becoming more client led and this implies that its findings need to be disseminated more widely whilst also being targeted to specific audiences. They make some suggestions for achieving this. </jats:p>
