These practices are the ingredients for all successful software development and digitization projects.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type="abstract-heading">Design/methodology/approach</jats:title><jats:p>Using project management best practices and personal experience, the paper describes three factors on which a successful technology project must be based.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type="abstract-heading">Findings</jats:title><jats:p>Whether they are full‐time professionals or part‐time novices, managers for successful technology projects ensure that their project is well planned, and that all stakeholders communicate clearly and frequently.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type="abstract-heading">Originality/value</jats:title><jats:p>Librarians often lack formal training in project management and learn project management skills on demand. The paper gives essential tips for project success.</jats:p></jats:sec>
