  • Description: <p>The following texts summarize the different perspectives of participants of the 8th International Symposium Plant Protection and Plant Health in Europe in Braunschweig, December 13 and 14, 2017, on “biorationals.” The aims of the symposium were to develop a critical perspective on the current risk and efficacy evaluation of “biorationals” and to evaluate the current classification system of “biorationals” via “mode of action” versus “applicant’s intention.” Furthermore, the event highlighted experiences with “acceptable” efficacy in pest management strategies balancing negative and positive effects and pointed out impediments to introduce “biorationals” into practice under the existing Sustainable Use Directive 2009/128. The results of the presentations and discussions are reported here.</p>
