• Beschreibung:
From investigations carried out for four years, animal protein plays an important part in the nutrition of the mole-cricket. Of 9 proteins in 17 combinations tested blood- and meat-powder are preferred. Moreover the following compounds, listed in an order of decreasing preference, were tested: eggalbumen, blood-albumen, skim-milk powder, casein, fish meal, gelatine, and yeast protein. These proteins influence one another. A mixture of blood- or meat-meal with gelatine is unsuitable as an attractant, whereas rice does not diminish the effectiveness. Protein-containing baits are superior to those containing carbohydrates. Refusal was not observed within 3 weeks when blood- or meat-meal was given, but did occur with carbohydrates or other nutrients from plants within 2 days. Starvation after feeding meats was shorter and less frequent than after plant feeding. During the nymphal period nutrition, either vegetarian or with a surplus of meat, has no influence on the reaction of the adult against protein containing baits. An explanation is given of the frequent failures of the use of baits. The reason is the physiology of the molecricket itself, based on a strong desire of insect food, the attitude to hold periods of starvation despite of adequate sources of food and the refusal of food which is given for longer periods, especially that containing usually certain carbohydrates in the baits. Another cause is the availability of animal food in the habitat of the cricket. The proteins remain attractive to some extent even if animal food is present in the soil at the same time, whereas carbohydrates and vegetables, such as potatoes, in this case are not observed by the mole-crickets, also rice is less effective in that instance.
