  • Beschreibung: Science and æsthetics among the Freemasons ; the example of the Bavarian Illuminati. This article explores the process which, during the 18th Century, brought aesthetic trends and scientific ideas closer together, and in which Freemasonry was a particular domain for exchanges and intellectual transfers. The trait which particularly predisposed Freemasonry to fulfill this function is the fact that it encourages and develops a taste for the sublime. The notion of the sublime also inspired reflection on art and the image in contemporary thought of scientific discovery. Thus Masonic culture contributed in an original way to the formation of a scientific imagination which proposed an aesthetic vision.
